What is Tendonitis?

  • Inflammation of a tendon is Tendonitis. Inflammation of the patellar tendon is called as patellar tendonitis.
  • Microscopic tears within the collagen matrix are caused by overuse of tendons. Palpation is used to detect swelling in a region of microdamage or partial tear.
  • Ultrasonography or magnetic resonance imaging is used to detect increased water content and disorganized collagen matrix in tendon lesions.
  • Tendons and ligaments are very slow to heal if injured, and rarely regain their original strength due to their highly specialized ultra structure.
  • A common therapy to treat tendonitis is non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs combined with rest and gradual return to exercise.
  • Acupuncture also helps to reduce the pain. Achilles tendonitis is a common injury, particularly in sports that involve lunging and jumping.
  • Symptoms vary from, an achy pain and stiffness to the local area of the tendon; to a burning that surrounds the whole joint around the inflamed tendon.
  • Elbow, wrist, biceps, shoulder, leg, knee, ankle, hip, and Achilles are the most common tendon areas.
  • As it strikes the areas you use most, it varies from person to person.
